Scrum Master

Job Specification

The Scrum Master is responsible for monitoring the scrum processes and meetings. They increase team efficiency, motivate the team whilst challenging and facilitating changes that will ensure quality and timeliness. They own the DoD “definition of done” and are responsible for the Scrum Artefacts. They will help the team to maintain their scrum tools (Storyboard, Action board, charts, backlogs, etc.) whilst handling all “in sprint” queries and questions to ensure all tasks are done and complete to the correct quality standards. You will serve as a mirror to the team and provide support for all Product Owners

Essential requirements/ experience

  • Second level Scrum Master certification (CSP, PSM II) or equivalent
  • Project management and Project Office experience
  • Experience of running Scrum using Jira
  • Strong communicator and team facilitator
  • Business analysis experience and experience of agile development environment
  • Experience in playing the Scrum Master role or Agile Project Manager for at least two/three year for a software development team that was diligently applying Scrum principles, practices, and theory
  • Good skills and knowledge of servant leadership, facilitation, situational awareness, conflict resolution, continual improvement, empowerment and increasing transparency
  • Knowledge of various well-documented patterns and techniques for filling in the intentional gaps left in the Scrum approach (example: numerous Burndown technologies, various Retrospective formats, handling bugs, etc.)
  • Knowledge of other Agile approaches: XP, Kanban, Crystal, FDD, etc.
  • Awareness and experience with widely successful Agile techniques: User Stories, ATDD, TDD, Continuous Integration, Continuous Testing, Pairing, Automated Testing, Agile Games
  • Applicable knowledge of the technologies used by the team
  • Excellent communication and mentoring skills
  • Product Management or Product Owner experience

Role Responsibilities

  • Guide team and organisation as to how to use Agile/Scrum practices and values to delight customers
  • Run daily, weekly and monthly agile rituals efficiently and strictly 
  • Tracks work progress to identify blockages and developer divergence from allocated tasks
  • Direct to team to get the most from self-organisation
  • Assess Scrum Maturity of the team and organisation and coach team to higher levels
  • Remove impediments and/or guide team to remove impediments by finding the right personnel to remove the impediment
  • Review improve and own team velocity and consistency. Identify barriers and make changes to increase velocity
  • Build trusting team environment where problems can be raised without fear of blame, retribution, or being judged, with an emphasis on problem-solving
  • Facilitate getting the work done without coercion, assigning, or dictating the work
  • Facilitate discussion, decision making and conflict resolution
  • Assist with internal and external communication, improving transparency and knowledge transfer
  • Support and educate all Product Owner, especially on grooming and maintaining the product backlog
  • Provide all support to the team using a servant leadership style whenever possible and leading by example
  • Ability to validate and prioritise requirements
  • Experience of collaboration with UI/UX teams
  • Experience working with Development and Test teams
  • Strong people skills with ability to influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
